There are many interesting buildings in Ufa. One of them is Lala Tulpan. It is one of the largest mosques in Russia. It has got two minarets, each of them is 53 metres tall. The mosque was designed in the modernist style by architect Wakil Davlyatshin. Its construction began in 1989 and it was finished in 1998. The Mosque is a three-storey building made of stone. Its walls are decorated with marble and serpentine; its ceramic tile floors are covered with carpets. The Mosque can hold a thousand people; there is also a special balcony for women (its capacity is 200). It was officially opened on April 7, 1998, which means that Lala Tulpan is only 20 years old. But although it is a relatively young structure, it is already an important Muslim religious centre of Ufa and Bashkortostan. Important Islamic holidays are celebrated in Lala Tulpan. In 2001 Russian president V. Putin visited Lala Tulpan and met with the local Muslim leaders. The Russian Islamic University was also located at Lala Tulpan in 1999 - 2005.
