Эти животные быстры и грациозны в воде, а на суше неуклюже передвигаются, ползая на брюхе.Ласты тюленей не что иное, как преобразованные конечности. Плечевая кость и половина предплечья (или предплечье целиком) у ластоногих спрятаны в туловище, и только половина предплечья и кисть (или только кисть) образуют передние ласты. Задние ласты также образованы костями ступней. У настоящих тюленей на пальцах передних ласт сохранились когти им вылезать из воды на лед.
