It was wooden, cheap and hard to break in comparison with porcelain dolls. The word 'matryoshka' comes from the woman's name Matryona, which means 'mother of the family'. It is a symbol of the family. A Matryoshka set consists of 2 to 24 dolls, usually girls, in traditional dress. Inside this wooden doll there are other dolls which are identical to each other. The Matryoshka is much younger than a lot of people think. Matryoshka dolls were created at the end of the 1890s by Sergei Malyutin and Vassily Zvyozdochkin and became famous after the Paris World Exhibition in 1900. Nowadays in souvenir shops tourists buy different kinds of Matryoshkas as a gift. 3) The kite is a symbol of the Chinese handicraft.
